Election Notes
  • The Adams vote is that for Israel Whelen (one of the 15 Federalist candidates for elector) and the Jefferson vote is that for Thomas MacKean (one of the 15 Republican candidates). These are the only candidates for whom county-level results are consistently reported, and statewide the MacKean and Whelen totals are close to the Republican and Federalist averages, respectively.
  • The reported statewide totals for MacKean and Whelen (12,306 and 12,185) are inconsistent with the county-level data, which sum to 12,333 and 12,101. For consistency's sake, the latter are used here, though the former are the totals given in the official proclamation.
  • According to the same statewide returns:
    • Republican candidates received betwen 12,173 and 12,306 votes (average 12,257).
    • Federalist candidates received between 12,071 and 12,217 votes (average 12,157).
  • The returns for Greene County (Jefferson 210, Adams 44) arrived too late to be counted, and accordingly are not included in the state totals.
    • "It should be noted, that had the Greene County returns arrived in time to be counted in the Official Proclamation, the entire Jefferson slate of Electors would have been chosen." Lampi Collection (see source note).
  • Philadelphia here includes the City of Philadelphia (Jefferson 1,733, Adams 1,091) as well as Philadelphia County (Jefferson 1,833, Adams 399).
